Keep These 2 Security Devices Of Your Home Maintained To Ensure Safety

by Gabe Herrera

If you use security cameras and a fire alarm system, you need to make sure you keep these things maintained. This gives you piece of mind knowing you and your family are safe and secure. Below is information about keeping these two things in good working condition.

Maintain Security Camera

Inspect your security camera system a few times each year. Look at all connectors for any signs of corrosion. If you find that any are corroded, you should replace them.

You should also clean the camera lens a couple of times per year. Over time, dust, dirt, water spots, and smudges can build up on the lens. If this happens, the image quality will be affected. To clean the lens, simply wipe over it with a lint free soft cloth.

Check the positioning of the security camera, as over time it may can become loose. If you have more than one security camera, review each camera position from within your home to make sure they show the area they are pointed to properly.

If the image quality is poor on the security camera, ask the security company to come inspect it for you. It may be something like a broken part or the entire camera could be bad and need to be replaced. This professional can also give you other maintenance tips.

Maintain Fire Alarm System

All companies have a fire alarm system, but you can also use these systems in homes. Your fire alarm system can save your life so it is important that you keep it in good condition. If you are not experienced with alarm systems, you should hire a professional to do this maintenance for you. Five maintenance steps they will do include:

  • The alarm sensors will be tested and calibrated, such as sensors for the smoke and flame detector. How this is done depends on the fire alarm system you have installed. You should find this information in the user's manual if you do this on your own.
  • Test the annunciator, which is the control panel that you use to set the settings for the system.
  • Test the alarm sensitivity, which will show how quickly the alarm turns on if there is a fire.
  • Coordinate with your fire department to make sure your fire alarm is connected to their system
  • Check the battery's expiration date for corrosion and replace, if necessary.

If you have any questions about these devices, contact your security company, like Southern Maine Cabling, to help you.
